The goal of the commission will be to learn about the different technology options available and educate the public about them. The vote on the bill is scheduled for Dec. 21. As with Philadelphia and San Francisco, New York officials want networks to be built that will bridge the digital divide so that even the city’s poorest residents have affordable access to high-speed Internet connections.

18 Wi-Fi Hot Spot locations in 9 parks in 4 boroughs in NYC. The first was at Battery Park, which has 7 APs fed with 46 mbps backhaul. Central Park and eight other locations are to be completed in July. They all will offer free Internet access to the public using a backhaul of roughly 64Mbps,“roughly the equivalent of 30 T1 lines”, reports WiFi Planet. They’ll feature sponsored content.
